Good news. I think we knew when we we drafted him that he was never going to be more than a strong third liner so if he develops into that and successfully replaces Zubes then I think it's a win.

Hopefully Matteau will step up realizing the great opportunity he will have if he earns a spot on the team.

Matteau, Ruutu, and Zubrus are redundant and one of them will need to be moved or waived....would like to keep Matteau and see what he's got for a full year before looking to trade him but there are rumors floating around out there about him possibly being available.

Kind of a long shot for Matteau to get into a top 6 role with his numbers in the AHL, but the Devils could use some 3rd line grit.

Matteau - Josefson - Blandisi

A very inexperienced line, but they each have components to make it work: physicality, two way ability and speed n' skill. Would be fun to see in pre season or camp.

Our defense is actually really good. It's even better than last season after losing Fraser, Harrold and Salvador.

Larsson, Severson, and Greene should be a good top 3. Moore should be a solid player on the bottom or maybe second pairing guy. Merrill and Gelinas and maybe Mozik and hrabarenka should fight it out for 3rd pairing/7th dman duty.

Barring a trade, which i can see happening..

Boucher-Josefson-Zubby
Matteau-O'brien/Gio-Rutuu
Something along the lines of this, Tootoo-Zubby-Rutuu are interchangeable, and i'd rather see other guys like Pietilla and Coleman make the team so scrubs like those three don't have to play.
And then D is pretty straight forward for us,

I think we edge them out, Willie Mitchell is solid, Gudbranson is pretty good, and then everyone else is decent, Campbells cap hit is crazy, but is off the books this coming year. We have the better potential going forward, but they have a 19 yo first line defenseman, so i'm jealous of that

Matteau was a garbage pick from day one... Should have just gave it up and had a way better prospect then q in last years draft. I'm not going to argue wether Lou had any idea he would get the 2014 picks back at the time so I won't pretend to think he did because even if he didn't half of you would still be sold that it was all lous plan the whole time. Knowing what we knew then the pick should been forfeited.

The have ekblad. I'm seriously to lazy to look it up but has gudbranson improved at all ? Any time I've asked about him I haven't been told good things. People come in here and think this entire team is just garbage and that's not true at all I bet if we scored at league average we would of made the playoffs with our d no problem. We can't score goals and that is literally the only problem we have outside of being slow the past few years but that played into not scoring goals.

The idea behind keeping the pick isn't a dumb one, although I do think I would've passed on it. A player you picked in 2014 is theoretically going to be much further behind in his development than a player picked in 2012. So you're adding a player that can help sooner rather than later. That said, I don't think Lou expected to lose Parise in free agency and I don't think anyone planned on Kovy leaving. So he he obviously didn't expect for the team to go three years without making the playoffs.

It wouldn't surprise me, though I suppose it depends on what you consider a good year. For me, a good year for Matteau would be being in the lineup every game and putting up 20-25 points.
